“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: “What are you doing for others?” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today is a very important day for many Americans because it is the day that they give back in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. According to whitehouse.gov, “the MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President’s national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.”
Dr. King dedicated his life to helping others so it is fitting that many people consider his holiday “a day on instead of a day off.” This day is especially important to me because it provides a teachable moment for many students as they learn not only about Dr. King’s work but also how important it is to give back in their community – serving others.
It is really easy to get involved today in your community so I encourage everyone to turn a day off into a day of service. tlb
