I discovered a news story today that I could not wait to share. The Louisville Free Public Library with support from the Louisville Library Foundation and the Community Foundation of Louisville yesterday launched an initiative promoting early reading. The campaign aims to encourage “children to read or to be read at least 1,000 books before beginning kindergarten.” The mayor of Louisville, Greg Fischer, also supporting this initiative because he hopes to expose children to books early and often. Fischer also hopes to get parents involved and invested in the program. I think it is worthwhile because I believe it will help to establish an early partnership between home and school. Additionally, I believe it is important because reading lots of books helps children develop a love of books, a strong vocabulary, and an ability to make connections between the text and the real world.
