I began my day with a message from a dear friend. My friend said he ran across a piece of information and immediately thought about me. And, after reading it, I immediately wanted to share this information within my network.
New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, recently launched an initiative aimed at helping young girls understand their worth through their “character and skills not their appearance.” I am excited about this new initiative because I, too, believe society puts too much emphasis on what girls/women look like and not enough time into helping girls/women understand “their value” in this world. I applaud Mayor Bloomberg and his deputy press secretary, Samantha Levine, who will be leading the campaign. I realize one campaign won’t change everything; however, it is a start. More importantly, I hope it will restart a very important conversation about the health, self-esteem, and well-being of all girls in the US.
I encourage everyone to check out the NYC Girls Project website for more information. tlb
