In my quest to find effective ways to teach my students what it means to persevere when they are faced with challenges, I have discovered a NY Times series that illustrates the essence of fortitude (or my new favorite word, grit). I am certain that above all the skills that are essential to a quality education, the most important thing that young children should learn is how to persevere, to continue, to endure even when the odds are against them. In a changing 21st century world, how do we empower our students to push ahead toward their goals? I argue this can only be done if they possess a large measure of grit. tlb
