Language-Gap Study Bolsters a Push for Pre-K

Today, The Times published an article that once again highlights the literacy gap for the youngest and poorest in our country. It is probably no surprise to many educators that the literacy gap is increasing for many children; however, we do not seem to be any closer to isolating the cause or coming up with a realistic solution. Good resources cost money, but money is not enough. There also has to be community buy-in so that skills taught in school can be reinforced at home as well.

Like the author, I believe early exposure to “oral language and vocabulary are essential to reading comprehension” for children as they become life-long readers; however, I believe we must include parent education in any future plans to create Pre-K programs that will be successful. Ultimately, I believe helping all parents understand the benefits of early literacy will help all children find success as they learn to read.  tlb
