Over the past several years, when asked what I plan to do to celebrate a day home from school on Dr. King’s holiday, I’ve shared my plans to participate in a day of service. This year is no different as I plan to spend time reading to elderly women in a local nursing home. What about you? What are your plans for Monday, January 16?
The Corporation for National and Community Service supports the efforts of thousands of people each year who participate in a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Volunteers will take to the streets on Monday, January 16 working in community centers with the elderly and serving food in shelters and food pantries. While others may spend the day supporting the National Park Service by picking up litter in a neighborhood park. There are so many ways that we can honor Dr. King’s legacy of service on the day set aside to celebrate him. So, if you are interested in finding ways to give back in your community on January 16, check out the United We Serve website here or you can go directly to the MLK Day of Service website for more information on how to make the King Day of Service “a day on, not a day off.” tlb
