Inspiring Educators Who Inspire Future Leaders

Why Math Matters in STEM

Like so many educators, I am very excited about the blending of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math into what we loving call STEM. While there are lots of reasons to be excited about STEM education, I wonder about two important things:

  • Have we missed important opportunities to better integrate STEM into the curriculum?
  • And, in our urgency to make our schools STEM worthy, have we inadvertently sacrificed a key element of STEM – math?

Whether you agree with the notion that losing math in STEM dilutes and even changes its focus, there are lots of opinions out there about the subject. I’d like to share the STEM by Design index from MiddleWeb on why keeping math in the center of STEM is so important. Check out the post “STEM Programs Must Not Leave Math Behind!”  tlb
