NPR’s Morning Edition editor, Joanne Levine, shared a post today which asked a compelling question: What does Martin Luther King’s legacy look like to a 5-year-old? Her seemingly simple question holds a great deal of complexity because Dr. King’s legacy is linked to one of the darkest times in our history. Even so, Levine’s question is a relevant one for any teacher/administrator to consider regardless of the age group. In fact, I believe a bigger question for educators is: what does Dr. King’s legacy look like to a generation of children too young to truly understand what his dream of equality for all means? As an early childhood educator, I believe it is essential to share Dr. King’s legacy with our students, and we can do so easily by focusing on the ideas of hope, faith, commitment, and peace. On this day and every day, let’s work to keep Dr. King’s legacy alive! tlb
