Non-traditional students are being challenged in a program that connects academics with real world opportunities. P-Tech is a Brooklyn based-school program “whose mission is to give students a leg up in the field of computer science/technology regardless of their future field of study or future occupational goals.” In order to meet the needs of students in the program, students benefit from an “extended day as well as a year round school model.” Both models give students “the opportunity to sharpen their skills as they prepare to enter the work force.” The program is also unique because it begins in high school and continues for six years (students are able to earn an Associate’s degree once they finish the program). One of the best aspects of the program is that it empowers students to be active participants in their own learning. Students work with their instructors to create a schedule and program that works for the student; thus, becoming full partners in their learning. tlb
