Using LEGO to Build Math Concepts | Scholastic.com

LEGOIf you were like me, the thought of math made you want to run for cover. I cannot explain my fear of math as a child. I can only tell you that anything to do with math made me a little crazy. Now LEGO on the other hand was a favorite of mine as a child. I could play with LEGO for hours on end (creating a variety of structures of different shapes, colors, and sizes). Fast forward thirty+ years and it is great to know that my favorite toy is now being used to help young children who squirm when they hear their teacher say it is time for math.

The way that we use LEGO today has truly enhanced the way we teach math to young children, and some talented teachers at Scholastic.com have created a great resource for teachers and parents looking for creative ways to help teach math concepts to children of all ages. Check out Alycia Zimmerman’s blog post on how to build math concepts (including adding, subtraction, multiplication, and fractions for example) using LEGO. Enjoy! tlb
